Ah! Another beautiful sunny day in sleepy backwater Pui O – a new week in a new year; a new decade no less. On days like this I really feel life is worth it, yes I feel downright happy to be alive. Happy and a bit privileged to be, not only me and alive but also living in afore-mentioned sleepy backwater Pui O. Not, for example, a mentally handicapped man living in Sichuan province.
Yes yes, everybody wants to make a living, and some mainlanders, I have to hand it to them, are more creative when it comes to making a quick buck than a lot of other people. But really? Kill strangers for fake compensation?
As always when I read stuff like this, I wonder how it all begins. Is it: One guy comes up with the idea: Hey, let’s kidnap mentally handicapped geezers, drag them down in mines and kill them and then blackmail the mine owner to pay compensation?
Or: The mentally handicapped geezer is already down the mine and another geezer kills him by accident or for fun, Â and then gets the idea?
Or: Nine guys get together over dinner and start from the other end: Hey, I hear mine owners are paying out a lot of compensation now because it’s cheaper than making mines more secure. How can we get our share of the pie?
I suppose some people are just more entrepreneurial than others …Â And that in the future mine owners will have to pay out even less compensation than they do today and worry even less about worker safety in mines. Â When the next batch of 45 unskilled workers are crushed or suffocated down some hellish pit in Sichuan or wherever, the owner will just say that the families didn’t have good enough proof of being related to the dead guys, so won’t receive a single yuan. Sorry boys, and back to business as usual.
Yes, middle-class, white and living in Hong Kong! That’s the way to be.
