Oh it’s great to be on the road. S is driving a big, nay, enormous, Land Rover and I’m in charge of the music and pointing to roads that have the correct highway number on them but which the GPS “doesn’t like”, saying “wasn’t that US interstate number 17? Suddenly we’re driving through someone’s washing line?” But I have to say, that GPS has normally kept its end of the bargain and more.
Although I live in semi-rural conditions in Hong Kong, seeing the amount of just grass with nothing on it has been something of a culture shock. It’s just open space everywhere with no railings anywhere. And guess what? The Americans aren’t being killed en masse by walking across the road or being on the pavement.
Thundering into North Carolina was a huge moment, because it’s my friend Ellen’s home state. Then I remembered that she actually lives in Virginia now. Oh well.
