Was it Fumier or Ulaca who ranted on about how you can’t get tap water anywhere in restaurants anymore, but have to buy bottles of “mineral water” which is probably tap water anyway, everywhere?
Whoever it was, I support wholeheartedly the movement, “No Tap, No Hak” (”guest” in Cantonese and a terrible rhyme, but you get my driftee.) Yesterday we were having, or going to have, lunch in something called Heaven And Earth in D’aguilar street, a jumped-up darkened shithole two levels under the ground. Between us we would probably have left a thousand dollars for the food if it hadn’t been for: “Only bottled water!” (at $60 a pop.) What? - no, tap water is good enough for the likes of us. Cheers.
No, only bottled water!
Needless to say, we walked straight out of there, leaving the staff in their dark catacombs full of bottled water from the tap. I hope everyone will join Fumier (or was it Ulaca?) and me in always leaving restaurants in which this insane policy is in place.
“Red” in IFC2 is another one. In that particular shithole, you pay through your nose to not even not be given a glass of water, but to go and collect the food yourself.
Is this what it’s going to be now - Peninsula prices, McDonald’s service?
Ah sin, it’s all very well complaining about being forced to buy bottled water at different eating establishments, but at the end of the day if you don’t like it, then people should do what you did when you went to that hell hole now called “heaven on earth” (which was previosly the Bulldog) and that is to leaave. You could end up doing this a lot because many places operate this practice of supplying bottled water to their patrons. What would be useful, if people like Fumier and others don;t want to pay for bottled water is to put togther a paper directory or website blog, showing which establishments will supply tap water at the customers request and which wont. Data and additional comments could also be added by ther people who wish to add comments, such as, “had to get my own food”
I wuld prefer to moan about the previous topic on your blog than bottled water. After all, look at all the trouble it nearly caused when Watson;s Water went on strike for 2 days, OMG ! No water in the office dispensers everyone, how are we like gonna last the whole day like, I mean shall we send the office OA with a shopping trolley and like stock up in case the strike goes on to long, what do you think guy’s”
End
Good post. Red is a fucking nightmare, I’ve been saying it for years. I never go there any more, as the bolshy crap service, average food, shit music and crowds drive me nuts.
Add on that you have to get the food yourself and the place is a joke. Only in Hong Kong, city of Idiots. The crap people put up with here is astonishing.
Cheers
Jimsee: I think you mean Mad Dog’s, whose quiz nights I used to enjoy.
Yes, just leave! It’s the best way. Vote with your feet - and some expressive grimaces.
Champ, don’t get me started on Red! Stand in line to pre-pay for food in a restaurant? Then go and get it yourself?
I’d only been there once before and at that time some drinks miraculously appeared on the table; brought by my friend I understand now. I had no idea it was a glorified McDonald’s with Prada waiters until I was made to jump up when a little light came on, and run over like a good girl to get the (spectacularly mediocre) food. People do this on a regular basis? Incredible!
What next? Be “allowed” to cook your own food for only a 30% increase in the price?
By the way - no need to buy bottled water. Just fill up your water bottle at home before you go to work and then from taps or water dispensers around the city.
The landfills would collapse to the tune of 25%.
I’m not sure which of me, Ulaca or Fumie should be flattered, but I suspect you could be referring to http://smogsblog.wordpress.com/2008/05/11/free-tap-water/
I’ve added Red and Heaven on Earth to the list.
Aiaaaaaaaaa - sorry! But: You should all be flattered. All.
Water? Never touch the stuff!
Cess, the senescence has set in early (or you’re older than you look in your photos). I see you left a comment on smoggie’s aquatic post.
Am I expected to remember everything I do when I’m drunk? And anyway - you, Fumie, Smogs. One and the same to me. More or less. With certain modifications.
Yes that photo is from 1962.
It couldn’t have been me anyway. I don’t rant.
